Useful Apps - The following is aimed at children aged six and younger and those who are struggling with English.

Apps to help children to improve their literacy, language, communication and handwriting (Feb, 2020)

There is a vast number of apps that claim to help children to learn. Fortunately, The Department for Education has produced a list of six apps that it feels will improve literacy, language, communication and handwriting. They are:

1) Liguini – aimed at children aged 2 to 5. It uses speech recognition and video games to improve grammar and speech.

2) Kalgo – aimed at three to five year olds. It is a digital handwriting exercise using a stylus and tablet. It was built using A.I. and created with teachers, neuroscientists and therapists.

3) Phonics Hero – for children who have started school. It has more than 900 games to take youngsters through the 44 phonetic sounds.

4) Fonetti – describes itself as the world’s first listening bookshop. It gives visual clues as the child reads aloud. It highlights where the most support is needed.

5) Teach Your Monster to Read – this uses games in which school-aged children can meet characters and collect friends.

6) Navigo - focuses on developing the skills that underpin reading, including phonics, letters and sounds through games and the games can help children who are learning English as a foreign language.

The National Literacy Trust’s recent report says that audiobooks can benefit children’s reading.
