Reasons to hire a tutor

It can be very difficult for teachers to provide the tailored, individual level of support that teachers would like to provide to a child, especially when they are in a class of 30.

Good tutors will get to know their client and what helps them to learn. Tutors have the time to identify fundamental gaps in knowledge and understanding that once filled, can allow each child to make great strides forward in their learning.

Some people have hired me because they are concerned their child is behind their peers or heading that way. Others have recruited me because they want to stretch their child and are concerned that they will otherwise become bored.

I have been engaged by parents because they want more feedback regarding  how their child is progressing than their schoolteacher provides. I provide feedback at the end of every tutoring session.

Kumon is something I am often asked about. Kumon can have brilliant benefits for children who: 1) respond well to being given worksheets, 2) who are happy to be given time limits to complete their work; 3) don't need to be taught how to do something. I believe Kumon is at its best when it is used to learn times tables because it involves a lot of repetition. It cannot replace a tutor who is teaching a range of strategies and is adapting to meet the child's needs.
